SC Project STR-1  Testing

Picture
I have completed testing and tuning with the SC Project  STR-1 full  exhaust  systems on the 2021 Mt09.

The system is high quality with nice welds and very good fit.    It did include an o2 extender.  The o2 bung only accepts narrow band o2 sensors so for tuning I needed to use an adaptor, for the normal customer this is not an issue.

The instructions are more of a diagram and not really instructions.   The header pipes came not installed to the collector with no markings for location.  It took me several tries to get the header put together properly on the work bench.   I installed the header on the bike with it put together but with none of the springs hooked up.   This worked well.  Once the header was  done,  I found the rest of the system straight forward to install.    It is solid with excellent fit to the bike and to the different pieces of the system.    The canister is only 2 bolts and uses the stock mounting brackets making it easier to install.

Install took me an hour and 15 minutes from start to finish.   I removed the top radiator mounting bolts which allowed me to slide the radiator off the bottom mount.  I also loosened the bottom radiator bracket  bolt so the bracket could move around which eased install.    The header once assembled like described above was easy to install.  The  header flanges are thick and high quality.   I used new exhaust gaskets but think you would be fine reusing the stock ones as they are very thick.   I used dabs of grease to hold the exhaust gaskets in place when mounting the header tubes.       Once the exhaust was loosely  on the bike , I moved from the back of the bike forward to tighten all the bolts and added the exhaust springs.   Many people do this backwards and start at the front of the bike which can give you alignment issues, especially with a header like this that is not welded together.

My highly calibrated bathroom scale weighed  the stock exhaust at 16 lbs with the  SC project STR-1  weighing in at 13  lbs with all the hardware and catalyst , for a savings of 3 lbs.

The system comes with a DB killer.  It was a little tough to remove as the bolt to secure it was tach welded into place.  Once the weld spot was broken it was easy to take in and out.

I did this testing a little different than others,  I first wanted to establish if it would perform better with the catalyst installed or not installed.  I still had the sprint filter and AB mod intake set up installed on my bike so instead of creating more work for myself, by returning it to the stock intake, I started testing with that set up

First dyno run  DB killer in , Sprint filter and AB mod Catalyst in (red) vs out (blue).  To my surprise the bike made more peak power with the cat in , area under curve is close.   Another surprise is the bike was louder during the dyno runs with the catalyst in vs cat out!!??  I can only guess that the catalyst lines up the flow better into the muffler box.  The muffler box is not a straight through design

DB killer in , Cat out:   65.7 db at idle 110.5 during dyno runs
DB killer in, Cat in :       61.2 at idle  113.2 during dyno runs

next lets look at  the  DB killer out , Sprint filter and AB mod  catalyst in (red)  vs out (blue).  Again the catalyst in made more peak power and was louder during the run

DB killer out, Cat out:   74.5 db at idle 112.8  during dyno runs

DB killer out, Cat in :       67 at idle  115.2 during dyno runs

Picture
After this testing I decided  the DB killer out with catalyst in would be the way I would do the rest of the testing.   I usually get a baseline run with the system installed and the stock ECU but forgot to do that, oops.

This run shows the stock bike (red)  vs the STR-1 with stock air box ,  my flash  , DB killer out, cat in(blue)

The next runs show STR-1 with DNA stage 2 lid ( blue)  vs with Sprint filter and AB mod (red) both optimized for the set up.   Same pattern we have seen with other exhausts.   The sprint and AB mod performs better on the top and bottom with a healthy portion of the midrange being stronger with the DNA lid
